Budd-Chiari syndrome

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is caused by obstruction of hepatic venous outflow involving either the hepatic veins or the terminal segment of the inferior vena cava.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation

Disseminated intravascular coagulation is characterized by the widespread activation of coagulation, which results in the intravascular formation of fibrin and ultimately thrombotic occlusion of small and midsize vessels.

This case suggests that nonfatal forms of Budd-Chiari syndrome may complicate pre-eclampsia; predisposition to partial venous outflow obstruction in the pre-eclamptic patient may be pathogenetically related to disseminated intravascular coagulation.
