Eosinophilic gastroenteritis

A rare benign gastrointestinal disease characterized by the presence of abnormal and nonspecific gastro-intestinal (GI) manifestations, associated with an eosinophilic infiltration of the GI tract, which can affect several segments and involve several layers within the GI wall.

Achalasia

A disorder of esophageal motility characterized by the inability of the lower esophageal sphincter to relax during swallowing and by inadequate or lacking peristalsis in the lower half of the body of the esophagus.

	A patient with vigorous achalasia is presented who had marked smooth muscle hypertrophy and eosinophilic infiltration of the esophagus identical to that seen in patients with eosinophilic gastroenteritis.
