Sickle cell anemia

Sickle cell anemias are chronic hemolytic diseases that may induce three types of acute accidents: severe anemia, severe bacterial infections, and ischemic vasoocclusive accidents (VOA) caused by sickle-shaped red blood cells obstructing small blood vessels and capillaries. Many diverse complications can occur.

Sinusitis

Inflammation of the paranasal sinuses owing to a viral, bacterial, or fungal infection, allergy, or an autoimmune reaction.

Nightmare complication after lumbar disc surgery: cranial nontraumatic acute epidural hematoma.
Grahovac G, Vilendecic M, Chudy D, Srdoc D, Skrlin J.
Spine (Phila Pa 1976). 2011;36(26):E1761-4.
The nontraumatic cranial epidural hematoma is an extremely rare clinical entity and it commonly occurs in the presence of infectious diseases as complication of sinusitis, coagulopathy, vascular malformation of the dura, hemorrhagic tumor, in patients with sickle cell disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, after open heart surgery, and in patients on hemodialysis.

Pathology of hyalohyphomycosis caused by Scedosporium apiospermum (Pseudallescheria boydii): an emerging mycosis.
Tadros TS, Workowski KA, Siegel RJ, Hunter S, Schwartz DA.
Hum Pathol. 1998;29(11):1266-72.
In one patient with sickle cell disease and chronic mycotic sinusitis, fungal colonies of S. apiospermum removed from the sinuses showed a pattern of alternating zones of mycelial hypercellularity and hypocellularity associated with conidiation, similar to a previous report of P. boydii infection.

Infarction of the orbit and paranasal sinuses in sickle cell disease.
Seibert RW, Seibert JJ, Frazier EA.
South Med J. 1987;80(12):1569-71.
Awareness of the orbital apex syndrome and infarction of the orbit and sinuses in patients with sickle cell disease is necessary to prevent misdiagnosis of these conditions as suppurative sinusitis.
