Sickle cell anemia

Sickle cell anemias are chronic hemolytic diseases that may induce three types of acute accidents: severe anemia, severe bacterial infections, and ischemic vasoocclusive accidents (VOA) caused by sickle-shaped red blood cells obstructing small blood vessels and capillaries. Many diverse complications can occur.

Vascular damage is a well known cause of hypopituitarism since Sheehan's report of postpartum pituitary necrosis; it has subsequently been reported that also sickle-cell anemia, eclampsia, pituitary apoplexy and other pathologies may induce failure of the anterior hypophysis through this mechanism.
