Meningioma

A rare, mostly benign, primary tumor of the meninges (arachnoid cap cells), usually located in the supratentorial compartment, commonly appearing in the sixth and seventh decade of life, clinically silent in most cases or causing hyperostosis close to the tumor and resulting in focal bulging and localized pain in less than 10% of cases. Additional features may include headache, seizures, gradual personality changes (apathy and dementia), anosmia, impaired vision, exophthalmos, hearing loss, ataxia, dysmetria, hypotonia, nystagmus, and rarely spontaneous bleeding.

It is important to recognize that angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma can occur in the lung because its histologic features are rather nondescript and thus can be mistaken for other tumors such as meningioma, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, and follicular dendritic cell sarcoma.

The primary intracranial giant cell type of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (GC-MFH) is rare, and the resemblance to meningioma causes diagnostic confusion.

Extrapleural solitary fibrous tumors have often been confused with other mesenchymal tumors, such as hemangiopericytoma, fibrous histiocytoma, fibrous meningioma, and leiomyoma, because of morphologic similarity and underrecognition, especially if some unusual features are present.

Peculiar meningeal tumour in a 4-months old baby: malignant fibrous histiocytoma?
Galatioto S, Gullotta F.
Pathologica. 1995;87(1):74-7.
The histological examination of a meningioma-like tumour operatively removed from the left frontoparetial region of a 4-months-old baby, disclosed a high-cellular malignant neoplasia built up by streams of elongated spindle-shaped cells, and with a predominant storiform-pattern as usually seen in malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH).
