Caudal regression sequence

Caudal regression sequence is a rare congenital malformation of the lower spinal segments associated with aplasia or hypoplasia of the sacrum and lumbar spine.

Maternal diabetes

Maternal diabetes can either be a gestational, mostly type 2 diabetes, or a type 1 diabetes. Essential is the resulting maternal hyperglycemia as a non-specific teratogen, imposing the same risk of congenital malformations to pregnant women with both type 1 and type2 diabetes.

Association of DiGeorge anomaly and caudal dysplasia sequence in a neonate born to a diabetic mother.
Dentici ML, Placidi S, Francalanci P, Capolino R, Rinelli G, Marino B, Digilio MC, Dallapiccola B.
Cardiol Young. 2013;23(1):14-7.
In particular, caudal dysplasia sequence has been linked to pregnancy complicated by maternal diabetes.

Maternal diabetes can cause a spectrum of manifestations, expressing with isolated DiGeorge anomaly or caudal dysplasia sequence, with intermediate phenotypes or with the co-occurrence of both the congenital anomalies in the same patient.

Ophthalmologe. 2011;108(8):771-5.
The patient suffered from maternal diabetes and sacral agenesis syndrome, which is also frequently associated with maternal diabetes.

Association of bilateral renal agenesis and Di George syndrome in an infant of a diabetic mother.
Gosseye S, Golaire MC, Verellen G, Van Lierde M, Claus D.
Helv Paediatr Acta. 1982;37(5):471-4.
There is a correlation between maternal diabetes and the bilateral renal agenesis-caudal dysplasia complex on one hand, and maternal diabetes and cardiac malformations on the other hand.
