Glucose-galactose malabsorption

Glucose-galactose malabsorption (GGM) is a very rare, potentially lethal, genetic metabolic disease characterized by impaired glucose-galactose absorption resulting in severe watery diarrhea and dehydration with onset inthe neonatal period.

Nephrocalcinosis

Nephrocalcinosis is the deposition of calcium salts in renal parenchyma.

This case indicates that hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis and proximal tubular dysfunction may be seen in association with glucose-galactose malabsorption and that most of these abnormalities improve with a glucose-galactose-free diet.

Pediatr Nephrol. 2005;20(9):1336-9.
Although GGM has been reported previously with nephrocalcinosis, this report is the first to show that renal tubular acidosis could explain the coexistence of nephrocalcinosis in patients with glucose galactose malabsorption.
