Neuroblastoma

Neuroblastoma is a malignant tumor of neural crest cells, the cells that give rise to the sympathetic nervous system, which is observed in children.

8226Neuroblastomas are tumors that arise from primitive sympathetic ganglion cells and are rarely seen in the pelvic region.8226Neuroblastomas are the most common extracerebral solid tumors in children under the age of five years.8226Acute urinary retention due to extrinsic compression from a pelvic mass is a rare phenomenon in infants.8226Pelvic neuroblastoma may cause acute urinary retention and acute kidney injury.

Herein we describe a 10-month-old child with neuroblastoma presenting with a complex clinical picture characterized by acute kidney injury manifested by renal insufficiency and signs and symptoms of tubulointerstitial damage, with polyuria, polydipsia, glucosuria, aminoaciduria and hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis, and of glomerular damage with heavy proteinuria.
