Neuroblastoma

Neuroblastoma is a malignant tumor of neural crest cells, the cells that give rise to the sympathetic nervous system, which is observed in children.

Methemoglobinemia

Abnormally increased levels of methemoglobin in the blood. In this form of hemoglobin, there is an oxidized ferric iron (Fe +3) rather than the reduced ferrous form (Fe 2+) that is normally found in hemoglobin. Methemoglobin has a reduced affinity for oxygen, resulting in a reduced ability to release oxygen to tissues.

We documented 2 cases of children suffering from neuroblastoma whose postchemotherapy anemia, leucopenia, and stomatitis were complicated by methemoglobinemia after using a formulary oral gel (7.5% benzocaine, doxycycline, nystatin, glycerin).
