Neuroblastoma

Neuroblastoma is a malignant tumor of neural crest cells, the cells that give rise to the sympathetic nervous system, which is observed in children.

Leptomeningeal enhancement

Contrast material enhancement of the pia mater or enhancement that extends into the subarachnoid spaces of the sulci and cisterns is leptomeningeal enhancement. Leptomeningeal enhancement is usually associated with meningitis, which may be bacterial, viral, or fungal. The primary mechanism of this enhancement is breakdown of the blood-brain barrier without angiogenesis.

Incidental neuroblastoma with bilateral retinoblastoma: what are the chances?
Roelofs K, Shaikh F, Astle W, Gallie BL, Soliman SE.
Ophthalmic Genet. 2018;39(3):410-413.
A child with bilateral familial retinoblastoma underwent staging MRI brain and orbit which identified subtle leptomeningeal enhancement, thus prompting an MRI whole body, which revealed a retroperitoneal mass, confirmed on laparoscopic biopsy to be neuroblastoma.
