Hereditary spherocytosis

Hereditary spherocytosis is a congenital hemolytic anemia with a wide clinical spectrum (from symptom-free carriers to severe hemolysis) characterized by anemia, variable jaundice, splenomegaly and cholelithiasis.

Peripheral neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a general term for any disorder of the peripheral nervous system. The main clinical features used to classify peripheral neuropathy are distribution, type (mainly demyelinating versus mainly axonal), duration, and course.

While the coexistence of hereditary spherocytosis and a peripheral neuropathy may have been purely coincidental, it is plausible that the isolated lesion in this patient was due to ischemic changes from underlying rheologic conditions, possibly in association with a variation in the neural or nutrient vessel supply to the EHL.
