Refractory anemia

Refractory cytopenias with unilineage dysplasia (RCUD) is a frequent low-risk subtype of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS; see this term) characterized by refractory cytopenias associated with dysplasia limited to one cell lineage.

Metabolic acidosis

Acid accumulation or depletion of base in the body due to buildup of metabolic acids.

It is concluded that Pearson's syndrome should be borne in mind in the differential diagnosis of refractory anemia especially when there are accompanying gastrointestinal disturbances and metabolic acidosis.
