Refractory anemia

Refractory cytopenias with unilineage dysplasia (RCUD) is a frequent low-risk subtype of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS; see this term) characterized by refractory cytopenias associated with dysplasia limited to one cell lineage.

Leukocytosis

An abnormal increase in the number of leukocytes in the blood.

Eight months after initial treatment, leukocytosis and reticulocytosis were observed and bone marrow aspirate showed hypercellular marrow with morphological and cytogenetic features (45, XX, -7 [16]/46, XX [4]) characteristic of MDS (refractory anemia).

The last patient presented combined features of CNL and refractory anemia with excess of blasts, and was characterized by both progressive leukocytosis and severe thrombocytopenia; acute transformation into acute myelogenous leukemia occurred 6 months after diagnosis and death 1 month later.
