Refractory anemia

Refractory cytopenias with unilineage dysplasia (RCUD) is a frequent low-risk subtype of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS; see this term) characterized by refractory cytopenias associated with dysplasia limited to one cell lineage.

Acute leukemia

A clonal (malignant) hematopoietic disorder with an acute onset, affecting the bone marrow and the peripheral blood. The malignant cells show minimal differentiation and are called blasts, either myeloid blasts (myeloblasts) or lymphoid blasts (lymphoblasts).

This report indicates that restoration of normal hematopoiesis, prolongation of disease-free survival, and delay in the transformation to acute leukemia may be achieved by this combination of treatment in a subset of patients with MDS, especially refractory anemia with severe thrombocytopenia.

Two cases of secondary MDS progressed refractory anemia with excess of blasts (RAEB), however two of 14 patients with primary MDS progressed to acute leukemia.

The prognosis in cases of refractory anemia with hyperplastic bone marrow following polycythemia vera is, independent of the subsequent acute leukemia, invariably terminal.
